Ncuti Gatwa transitions to a new role as he partners with a fellow Doctor Who cast member for a romantic comedy centered on a serendipitous encounter. Gatwa, known for his portrayal as the Fifteenth Doctor, will collaborate with Niamh-Marie Smith, who appeared as Sylvia Trench in the Christmas Special, Joy To The World.

Their joint project, a short film titled Passing Through, follows the story of two individuals meeting at a train station platform in December. Described as a contemporary and LGBTQ+-friendly interpretation of a meet-cute, Gatwa takes on the role of executive producer, marking his debut behind the scenes.

On the other hand, Smith will undertake the roles of writer, director, and lead actor in the production. Notably, she will be joined by Gemma Laurie, recognized for her performances in Shetland and ITV’s The Long Shadow.

The film also involves Becky Rossmaur, a former Doctor Who crew member, who contributes as the casting director. Gatwa expressed his excitement about the project, praising the script’s themes of human connection, grief, and cherishing life’s simple joys.

Having concluded his tenure as the Doctor after two seasons, Gatwa opened up about his departure from the series, citing exhaustion and the desire for a change. Reflecting on his time filming for Doctor Who and Sex Education, he acknowledged the challenges of being away from home and his readiness to explore new opportunities.
