Levi Bellfield is scheduled to provide investigators with a new DNA sample as part of the ongoing investigation into the hammer murders of Lin and Megan Russell. The notorious criminal had previously claimed responsibility for the brutal attack on Lin, 45, her daughter Megan, six, and her surviving daughter Josie, then nine, as they walked home from school in Kent on July 9, 1996.
A representative from the Criminal Cases Review Commission is set to visit Bellfield in prison to conduct a forensic assessment utilizing updated testing methods. The exact date for obtaining the DNA sample from Bellfield, who is currently incarcerated at HMP Frankland, has not been determined yet.
In a similar development, Michael Stone, who was previously convicted of the murders, recently provided a fresh DNA sample to the investigative team. Stone, now 66 and also held at HMP Frankland, was arrested after a TV appeal and subsequent confession, leading to his conviction in 1998.
Despite Bellfield’s initial confession to the Russell killings, he later retracted his statement. The authorities have found no evidence to support his claims, and Bellfield has a history of falsely admitting to crimes he did not commit.
Efforts to secure new DNA samples are essential for applying advanced testing techniques that can help identify potential perpetrators. These methods include the ability to separate DNA in mixed samples. The examination of exhibits from the crime scene, if new DNA is discovered, could be compared to Bellfield’s genetic profile.
Particular attention is being given to samples from a bloodstained shoelace used to restrain Lin, as well as tapings obtained from the victims’ bodies, which have not been retested since 1996. Josie, who survived the attack with head injuries, along with the family dog Lucy, which was also killed, are central to the forensic analysis.
Stone, who maintains his innocence in the murders and attempted murder of Josie, was identified as a suspect following a public appeal on Crimewatch. Bellfield, on the other hand, reportedly confessed to the killings of Lin and Megan during discussions with prison psychologists.
New forensic strategies and advanced testing methodologies are being employed to shed light on the tragic events of that fateful day in 1996.
