Excitement brews in Newfoundland and Labrador as a partial solar eclipse is set to grace the skies on Wednesday, weather permitting. The Johnson Geo Centre, in collaboration with the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada and STEM Girls, is organizing a viewing event in St. John’s from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. NT. Andrea van Nostrand, the lead of education and interpretation at Johnson Geo Centre, mentioned that telescopes and expert guidance will be available for attendees, while the totality will be live-streamed from Greenland, Iceland, and Spain.
The partial eclipse commenced in Churchill Falls at 1:37 AT (2:07 NT) and is expected to progress across the province, reaching St. John’s at 2:28 p.m. NT, with peak visibility at 3:34 p.m. The eclipse will conclude in St. John’s at 4:37 p.m. NT, with the moon obscuring about half of the sun’s surface in Newfoundland.
Children can engage in activities at the science center to craft solar viewing tools for safe eclipse observation. Despite the weather uncertainties, indoor events are planned at the Geo Centre. Weather conditions in St. John’s are forecasted to include periods of drizzle and fog dissipating in the afternoon.
Although the skies may clear by Wednesday afternoon for optimal viewing, CBC meteorologist Ashley Brauweiler mentioned that St. John’s and Gander are expected to witness about 53% sun coverage, while Nain will experience the highest obstruction at 55%. Hilding Neilson, an assistant professor in Memorial University’s physics department, noted that the partial eclipse may dim the surroundings slightly but won’t dramatically alter the environment.
As the anticipation builds, mother-daughter duo Jennifer Waye and Gabriela Fuentes Waye, inspired by a previous eclipse viewing experience, traveled to Spain to witness the total solar eclipse. In Canada, regions further north and east, including Alert, Nunavut, will have a more comprehensive view, with the sun almost entirely obscured at 94%.
While a total solar eclipse will grace Greenland, Iceland, Spain, and a portion of Portugal, aficionados are gearing up for the celestial spectacle. Whether the weather cooperates or not, enthusiasts are poised for a memorable cosmic event.
