A significant portion of NHS trusts in England have observed a deterioration in hospital waiting times over the past year. While NHS waits had been extending for over a decade under the Tories, recent progress is starting to show. However, data reveals that 31 hospital trusts have regressed.
Prior to assuming power in 2024, Labour had made a pledge to ensure timely treatment for planned care, like knee and hip operations, within 18 weeks, a central manifesto commitment. NHS data, obtained through Freedom of Information laws and initially disclosed to the BBC, indicates that 17 hospital trusts are struggling to meet the 18-week target out of the 129 trusts required to report information.
The target mandates that 92% of patients should receive care within 18 weeks, with an interim national goal of 65% set for March 2026.
About a year ago, the government unveiled its strategy to address the backlog when 59.2% of patients in England were waiting less than this four-and-a-half month period. This figure has slightly improved to 61.8%, with the overall appointment backlog dropping to 7.31 million, the lowest level since February 2023.
Nevertheless, some hospitals are experiencing stagnation, hindering Labour’s efforts to revamp the NHS. For instance, East Cheshire NHS Trust witnessed a notable decrease in the percentage of patients seen within the stipulated time frame. Similarly, Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust cited staff shortages and a rise in cancer referrals as reasons for a decline in meeting targets.
Resident doctors’ strike actions have also contributed to longer waits in certain trusts. Notably, Whittington Health NHS Trust and University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust experienced reductions in timely patient care.
Despite these challenges, some hospitals, including Shrewsbury and Telford NHS Trust, have seen substantial improvements in meeting targets. Overall, the latest NHS data for England indicates a significant decrease in the elective waiting list, marking the largest drop in 15 years outside of the pandemic.
Health Secretary Wes Streeting emphasized the government’s commitment to transforming promises into tangible changes in healthcare delivery. The government’s efforts have resulted in a significant reduction in waiting lists, with more patients receiving treatment promptly. The utilization of AI tools and the expansion of services have also played a role in enhancing healthcare efficiency.
