“NHS Waiting List Hits 3-Year Low, A&E Waits Surge”

Published on

The NHS has reached its lowest waiting list in nearly three years, but emergency room waits are increasing, posing a significant risk to vulnerable patients.

In England, the treatment backlog decreased in January to 7.29 million, marking the lowest level since February 2023. The backlog for various procedures like hip and knee surgeries and cataract treatments dropped by 18,000 last month. This follows a substantial decline of 86,000 appointments the previous month, the largest decrease in 15 years excluding the pandemic.

Over the past decade, the NHS elective waiting list in England has shown a continuous rise, surpassing milestones of three million treatments in 2014, four million in 2017, five million in 2021, and peaking at 7.8 million in 2023.

Despite these positive trends under the Labour government, A&E wait times are still on the rise, with a record number of individuals waiting over 12 hours. Health Secretary Wes Streeting commended the NHS for reducing waiting lists amid challenges like flu outbreaks and labor disputes.

The government has successfully reduced waiting lists by over 330,000, ensuring that more individuals receive treatment within 18 weeks. Efforts such as establishing new diagnostic centers, implementing surgical hubs to address backlogs, and investing in advanced technology are aiding in the NHS’s recovery.

In A&E departments, the number of individuals waiting at least four hours from decision to admission increased to 161,141 last month, the second-highest figure on record. Additionally, the number waiting over 12 hours for a hospital bed rose to 71,517 in January, the highest since monthly records began in August 2010.

Dr. Vicky Price, president of the Society for Acute Medicine, highlighted the risks faced by vulnerable patients due to overcrowding in hospitals. Financial constraints, staff shortages, and reduced bed capacity are exacerbating the situation.

Rory Deighton, director at NHS Providers and the NHS Confederation, acknowledged the progress made in reducing waiting lists but emphasized that the NHS is still facing immense pressure. Despite the decrease in seasonal illnesses, A&E departments and ambulances are experiencing record attendance levels and incidents, indicating ongoing challenges.
