“Nigel Farage Faces Inquiry Over £5M Cryptocurrency Gift”

Published on

Nigel Farage may face an inquiry this week regarding a £5 million gift received from a cryptocurrency billionaire. The leader of Reform UK is under scrutiny for accepting the funds from Christopher Harborne, a businessman based in Thailand, in 2024, just before running for MP.

Over the weekend, Nigel Farage’s deputy, Richard Tice, declined to confirm if Farage had received additional undisclosed multimillion-pound gifts from affluent supporters. Despite potential dual investigations into the matter, Farage asserts that the money was a personal gift without any obligations attached, maintaining his innocence.

The Electoral Commission is anticipated to make a decision on launching a formal investigation shortly, following multiple complaints alleging violations of election laws. Additionally, there could be a Parliamentary standards inquiry as regulations mandate disclosure of political donations and gifts within 12 months before entering Parliament.

Richard Tice defended Farage’s actions, stating that the £5 million was intended for Farage’s security expenses as a personal gift. However, he refrained from disclosing any possible undisclosed gifts. In response to criticism, Tice expressed frustration with the scrutiny and accused detractors of attempting to tarnish their reputation.

Following revelations of the gift by The Guardian, the Conservative Party urged the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner to investigate the matter. Reform UK affirms that the substantial contribution from Harborne was an unconditional personal gift, emphasizing his previous contributions to the party.

The Chair of the Labour Party, Anna Turley, criticized Farage and his party for allegedly disregarding regulations and benefiting from undisclosed donations. Turley highlighted concerns over potential conflicts of interest, particularly Farage’s proposed policy to reduce crypto asset taxes, which could favor his benefactor.

She also raised questions about Richard Tice’s business affairs, citing allegations of unpaid corporation tax. Tice responded by expressing willingness to rectify any discrepancies in tax payments.

Despite the controversies, Tice argued that voters continue to support Farage and Reform UK, emphasizing their compliance with regulations. He stressed the importance of Farage’s security, indicating that the £5 million gift was primarily allocated for that purpose.

During a testy interview with Sky News, Farage dismissed concerns about the gift, asserting that it was personal and within legal boundaries. He defended his actions, stating that he had carefully reviewed the rules before accepting the donation.
