Nigel Farage is facing pressure to clarify whether he reported allegations of Russian espionage targeting his phone to expose a hidden £5 million “gift” from a cryptocurrency billionaire.
Initially, the leader of Reform UK stated that the controversial donation from mogul Christopher Harborne was intended for his personal security. Later, Farage suggested it was a token of appreciation for his involvement in the Brexit campaign.
Following the disclosure of the “gift,” Reform UK asserted that an examination by counter-espionage specialists revealed that malicious state actors, likely linked to Moscow, attempted to compromise Farage’s phone, email, and financial accounts.
Labour Party Chair Anna Turley has demanded that Farage disclose whether he reported this incident to law enforcement or a security agency. Failure to do so within 24 hours, according to Labour, will prompt them to push for an investigation.
In a letter to Farage, Turley emphasized the seriousness of the alleged crime and the potential implications for national security, political integrity, and public trust in the democratic process. She urged all evidence of foreign interference to be turned over to the proper authorities for thorough and impartial scrutiny.
Farage did not declare the £5 million donation in the members’ interests register, as he received it just before being elected as an MP in the 2024 election. Newly elected MPs are obligated to disclose financial interests from the previous 12 months under House of Commons regulations.
The Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards is examining whether Farage violated these obligations, while the Electoral Commission is contemplating launching its investigation. Harborne, a British entrepreneur based in Thailand, contributed £12 million to Reform UK last year.
In response, a spokesperson for Reform asserted that the incident had been reported to relevant authorities but refrained from specifying to whom. The spokesperson stated that further comments would be withheld until the investigations are completed.
