Nightclub Outbreak Triggers Meningitis Scare

Published on

Following a night out at a Kent nightclub to celebrate a friend’s birthday, a mother shared a cautionary tale after her daughter was hospitalized with meningitis within days.

The nightclub in question, Club Chemistry, has been linked to a series of cases involving a viral outbreak resulting in the tragic deaths of two individuals and the hospitalization of 11 others. Casey Marlow attended a Spring Fling event at the Canterbury club on March 6, but her mother, Emma Marlow, noted a rapid decline in the 19-year-old’s health. Initially experiencing a sore throat, Casey’s condition worsened, leading to her hospitalization in isolation to combat the potentially fatal infection.

Emma Marlow, from Ashford, Kent, recounted how her daughter’s health deteriorated rapidly, prompting a hospital visit where Casey has since been under care. Fortunately, the young woman is expected to fully recover with the aid of antibiotics, as confirmed by her mother who expressed gratitude for the ongoing progress and care received.

In light of her daughter’s ordeal, Emma Marlow issued a cautionary message to local residents, advising anyone feeling unwell in the area to seek medical attention promptly. Additionally, she mentioned that the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) had contacted her to assist in identifying individuals who may have come into contact with Casey, who works at a Five Guys burger restaurant.

Louise Jones-Roberts, the owner of Club Chemistry, stated that the venue was cooperating with UKHSA to track and notify potentially affected individuals, acknowledging the challenges involved. She mentioned the use of an ID scanner for security purposes, which captures identification details of patrons for security measures.

One of the deceased individuals was identified as Juliette, a year 13 student at Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School in Faversham, described by her headteacher as exceptionally kind, thoughtful, and intelligent. The second fatality was a University of Kent student. Images depicted long queues of students at the university awaiting antibiotics.

A UKHSA spokesperson informed the Press Association of the collaboration with the University of Kent to distribute advisory letters to all 16,000 students, providing information on recent cases, symptoms, antibiotic access, and steps to take if feeling unwell.
