South Korea announced that the reclusive nation led by Kim Jong-un fired an unidentified projectile towards the Sea of Japan. The Japanese Ministry of Defence confirmed that the launched object was indeed a ballistic missile.
According to South Korea’s Defense Ministry, the projectile was launched from North Korea’s eastern coast on Tuesday. Specific details regarding the distance it traveled were not disclosed by South Korean officials.
Tensions escalated between the two Koreas recently when North Korea accused South Korea of flying surveillance drones across the border, leading to threats of retaliation. The South Korean government refuted these claims, stating they had not operated any drones during the specified times and initiated an investigation into possible civilian involvement.
Earlier this month, North Korea announced the testing of hypersonic missiles, with Kim Jong-un overseeing the launches and emphasizing the importance of strengthening the country’s nuclear deterrent, as reported by North Korea’s state media.
The timing of Tuesday’s missile launch precedes North Korea’s upcoming ruling party congress, aimed at setting new political and economic agendas, marking the first such congress in five years.
In a separate development earlier this month, Kim Jong-un removed a vice premier due to issues in a factory modernization project. This move was seen as an effort to enforce discipline among officials and drive greater performance ahead of the significant political assembly.
Kim Jong-un, as per the Korean Central News Agency, held the dismissed vice premier accountable for creating disruptions in the efforts to modernize the Ryongsong Machine Complex. The North Korean leader criticized the official for causing economic losses and failing to show responsibility despite prior warnings.
He metaphorically likened the vice premier’s actions to a mismatched yoke, stating, “Could we expect a goat to pull a cart for an ox?” portraying the appointment as an error in personnel decisions.
