North London Builder Denies Banksy Connection

Published on

A North London builder, George Georgiou, has vehemently refuted claims linking him to the renowned street artist Banksy. Speculation arose when Georgiou was seen installing protective coverings around a Banksy artwork at the Hornsey Road tree mural in London in March 2024. Despite recent revelations identifying Banksy as Robin Gunningham from Bristol, images of Georgiou from 2024 have resurfaced.

In a statement to the Daily Mail, Georgiou expressed frustration over the persistent rumors, firmly denying any connection to Banksy. He dismissed the two-year-long theories as “annoying” and emphasized that he is not the enigmatic artist. Georgiou clarified that he occasionally performs maintenance work on properties owned by his sons and humorously suggested that Banksy, if involved, would not personally handle such tasks due to his presumed wealth.

Addressing those who accused him of being Banksy, Georgiou urged them to “grow up” and emphasized that the real artist would not engage in building work. While initially finding the claims amusing, the semi-retired builder now seeks an end to the disruptive speculation, stating that it has been a constant interruption in his daily life.

Recent reports by Reuters identified Robin Gunningham as Banksy, operating under the pseudonym David Jones. The investigation also revealed that Banksy may have had a collaborative partner for his artworks, contributing to the mystique surrounding the artist. Banksy’s anonymity has significantly escalated the value of his works, with pieces fetching substantial sums at auctions.

Journalists conducting the investigation uncovered previously sealed U.S. documents and police files in an attempt to unveil Banksy’s identity. They also interviewed witnesses who claimed to have seen him entering Ukraine in 2022 to create one of his iconic artworks. Locals reported encountering an individual named Dave Jones, accompanied by photographer Giles Duley, crossing into Ukraine on October 28, 2022.
