“Northwest Territories Reports Zero Opioid Deaths in 2026”

Published on

The Northwest Territories’ top public health official has reported zero deaths from opioid overdoses in 2026, despite the continued presence of dangerous drugs in the region. Dr. Kami Kandola stated that last year saw a decrease in overdose-related fatalities, with two deaths recorded compared to seven in 2024 (although another report indicated six deaths in 2024). In 2023, only three deaths were reported, but the numbers may have been skewed due to wildfire evacuations that year.

Despite a recent alert about carfentanil, a potent synthetic opioid found in cocaine in the region, Kandola emphasized the absence of fatal overdoses in 2026. She attributed this positive trend to enhanced access to harm reduction tools such as naloxone and fentanyl testing kits.

The deployment of “health boxes,” which function like vending machines offering free naloxone and testing kits, has contributed significantly to this increased access. Kandola revealed that 400 testing strips have been utilized from these machines, out of over 4,000 distributed overall.

Anecdotal feedback indicates that the testing has been effective, with reports suggesting that individuals have reduced their drug consumption upon testing positive. Kandola highlighted the role of naloxone in reducing fatal overdoses nationwide, underscoring the importance of continued vigilance despite the decline in deaths.

Wally Schumann, a resident of Hay River, N.W.T., who tragically lost his son CJ to a fentanyl-laced cocaine overdose in 2021, acknowledged the positive trend of fewer overdose deaths in 2026. However, he emphasized the persistent challenges posed by potent drugs circulating in communities and stressed the ongoing need for comprehensive solutions.

Research conducted by Kandola underscored the initiation of intervention strategies following a cluster of deaths in Hay River in 2022 linked to crack cocaine laced with fentanyl and carfentanil. This unprecedented combination resulted in six fatalities and prompted proactive measures to address the emerging threat.

Subsequent initiatives in the Northwest Territories include wastewater testing for toxic substances in Yellowknife and Behchokǫ̀, leading to public advisories based on the findings to enhance community awareness and safety.
