A notorious criminal leader has been found guilty as the sixth person convicted in the tragic killing of Joanne Penney in a case of mistaken identity. Renaldo Baptiste, a drug kingpin serving a life sentence, orchestrated the failed hit job on a rival gang member, leading to Joanne’s unintended death by a single gunshot wound. The incident took place in Talbot Green, near Cardiff, where the assailants mistakenly targeted Joanne instead of their intended victim.
Baptiste coordinated the deadly attack using prison phones to communicate with his criminal associates. Alongside Baptiste, four more individuals were convicted in a subsequent trial related to Joanne’s murder. Molly Ruth Cooper, Laura John, and former footballer Donna James were among those found guilty of various charges in connection to the crime.
Prior to his involvement in Joanne’s murder, Baptiste had been sentenced to a minimum of 25 years for another murder linked to his drug trade. During the trial, Baptiste confessed to facilitating drug deals from prison and being part of an Organized Crime Gang named Rico. He disclosed details of supplying drugs to other criminals and engaging in illicit activities to gain financial benefits.
The deadly events unfolded as a result of a territorial dispute between criminal factions in Talbot Green. Huntley, one of the perpetrators, contacted Baptiste to acquire a firearm and ammunition, intending to send a threatening message to their rivals. Despite Baptiste’s denial of direct involvement in obtaining the gun, evidence suggested his complicity in the crime.
After the shooting, efforts were made to conceal the weapons used in the attack. Huntley buried the pistol and ammunition, while accomplices attempted to flee the scene to evade capture. DNA evidence later linked Molly Cooper to the buried ammunition, indicating her direct involvement in the crime.
Following the tragic incident, Joanne’s family expressed their profound grief over her untimely death, emphasizing her cherished role as a daughter, mother, sister, and niece. They thanked the community for its support and condolences during this challenging time.
