A headline on The Mirror’s front page sparked nationwide shock, titled ‘Outrage over Liam’s 4-letter outburst on Radio 1’. Noel Gallagher had initially agreed to appear on DJ Steve Lamacq’s BBC show on the evening of October 23, 1997, for a live fan Q&A session. However, things took an unexpected turn when Liam unexpectedly crashed the interview after a drinking session with them earlier in the day.

This incident led to a memorable 90-minute exchange filled with profanity from the Oasis siblings. Liam made controversial remarks about the Rolling Stones and George Harrison, while also challenging them to a fight. Meanwhile, Noel referenced The Verve’s song, ‘The Drugs Won’t Work,’ with the statement “Drugs do work.” The tumultuous interview concluded with Liam storming out, leaving Noel and Steve to manage the aftermath and apologize to listeners.

Reflecting on the chaotic encounter, Steve, who is set to host a new show, Indie Forever, on BBC 6 Music, described it as one of the most rock ‘n’ roll moments akin to the Sex Pistols’ appearance on the Today program. He highlighted the underlying sibling dynamics between the Gallaghers, noting Noel’s teasing of his younger brother, which was laced with affection.

Steve reminisced about various encounters with iconic musicians throughout his career, including a surreal experience with Nirvana in a West London B&B. He recounted an amusing anecdote about meeting Dave Grohl shortly after he joined the band.

In his illustrious career, Steve has introduced numerous legendary bands to the airwaves, such as Blur, Pulp, and Coldplay. Despite his professional success, he cherishes his role as a father the most, emphasizing the transformative impact of fatherhood on his life.

Additionally, Steve shared his daughter’s burgeoning interest in music and his hopes to revive the iconic Evening Session show. He expressed optimism about a potential Oasis-style reunion in the future, driven by public demand.

*6 Music Indie Forever debuts on BBC Sounds on July 22, while Steve’s show, The Rise and Fall of The Smiths, premieres on July 25 on the same platform.
