“Outrage in Turkey: Dismembered Woman Found in Trash”

Published on

A shocking incident in Turkey has stirred up widespread anger as the dismembered remains of a woman were discovered in a trash bin.

The body of the woman, wrapped in a sheet, was found by a paper collector rummaging through items for recycling in Istanbul’s Sisli district on Saturday evening.

The victim, a 37-year-old Uzbek national, was identified by Turkish authorities. Following a meticulous investigation aided by CCTV footage, the woman’s head and legs were located, leading to the arrest of two Uzbek suspects at Istanbul Airport as they attempted to flee the country. Subsequently, a third suspect was apprehended, sparking outrage and protests across the nation.

In response to the heinous crime, over a thousand individuals gathered in Istanbul and Ankara, demanding justice for the slain woman and an end to femicides.

At Osmanbey metro station in Sisli, large crowds assembled, displaying banners with messages such as “Stop male violence!” and “Migrant women are not alone,” highlighting the urgent need to combat gender-based violence.

Isil Kurt from Türkiye’s We Will Stop Femicides Platform condemned the perpetrators’ brazen act, emphasizing the persistent issue of violence against women despite changing times and locations.

While specific national data on femicides in Turkey is limited, reports from the Stop Femicides civil platform revealed a troubling trend, with 294 women killed by men in 2025, along with 297 women found dead under suspicious circumstances.

According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, an alarming statistic emerged in 2024, indicating that approximately 50,000 women and girls worldwide were victims of femicide, equating to one life lost every 10 minutes due to domestic violence.
