A recent study reveals that children in reception year faced challenges in regulating their behavior during the Covid-19 lockdowns. Researchers examining the impact of the pandemic on UK children observed difficulties in maintaining focus and adapting to new situations. The study assessed children’s skills and found that those in reception at the onset of the initial lockdowns experienced the most significant setbacks. This stage is crucial for socialization, routine-following, and navigating the classroom environment.

Comparatively, children who were in preschool when the pandemic began showed more growth in regulating emotions and adapting as needed. The University of East Anglia research team suggests that these reception children may continue to feel the effects for years to come. Lead researcher Prof John Spencer noted a slower development in key self-regulation and cognitive flexibility skills in children who were in reception during the lockdowns.

The study, conducted in collaboration with Lancaster University and Durham University and published in the journal Child Development, tracked 139 children from toddlerhood to early school years. Using the Minnesota Executive Function Scale, researchers measured cognitive skills at regular intervals. Reception pupils struggled to catch up, with those who exhibited stronger skills at a younger age maintaining an advantage.

Prof Spencer emphasized the significance of reception year for peer socialization, classroom norm learning, and building early friendships. The disruption caused by the pandemic, such as closed classrooms and limited social interactions, hindered the development of self-regulatory and cognitive flexibility skills in reception children. The study highlights the importance of peer socialization and new self-regulatory skills in shaping executive function skills during this critical developmental stage.
