A murder trial jury has been informed that a five-week-old infant passed away due to severe brain trauma after enduring 47 rib fractures from repeated attacks allegedly carried out by her parents. The prosecutors claim that Darcy-Leigh Jefferson also suffered fractures in both legs over a 10-day period leading up to her death in March 2022. Sean Jefferson, 35, and Amy Clarke, 34, have pleaded not guilty to charges of murdering Darcy-Leigh and being complicit in her demise.
During the trial’s opening statements at Stafford Crown Court, prosecutor Harpreet Sandhu KC revealed that Darcy-Leigh succumbed on March 29, 2022, following her hospitalization on March 27. It was disclosed that Clarke resided in a well-maintained residence in Hudson Drive, Burntwood, Staffordshire, projecting an image of maternal control while concealing her excessive alcohol consumption and cocaine use.
Sandhu informed the jurors that Darcy-Leigh, born prematurely on February 20, 2022, weighed a mere four pounds and tragically passed away just five weeks later due to a severe brain injury sustained around March 27. The prosecution holds the parents accountable for the fatal incident, alleging that one or both of them were involved in her death or permitted it to happen.
The court was apprised of the infant’s extensive injuries, indicating a pattern of physical abuse beyond the fatal head trauma. Darcy-Leigh reportedly suffered a total of 47 rib fractures, with multiple incidents causing these injuries within the span of her short life. Additionally, she had leg fractures that were inflicted at different times, likely through twisting or shaking actions.
Sandhu further elaborated on the circumstances surrounding Darcy-Leigh’s care, highlighting missed opportunities within the social services system. Despite professional involvement and social services oversight, an error prevented Darcy-Leigh from being listed in the child protection database.
The prosecutor shed light on the tumultuous relationship dynamics between Jefferson and Clarke, emphasizing the role these dynamics played in the tragic events. Clarke’s seemingly well-ordered facade masked a chaotic reality influenced by substance abuse, while Jefferson’s history of threats hinted at a volatile atmosphere in the household.
As the trial progresses, more details are expected to emerge regarding the events leading to Darcy-Leigh’s untimely demise.
