A couple has been sentenced for the presence of cocaine in a 12-week-old baby they were caring for. Kevin Fields, 29, received a two-year prison term, while Ella Jones, 28, was handed a suspended two-year sentence after admitting to causing harm to the child. The incident came to light when a pediatrician alerted the police about the baby’s condition at A&E on May 27, 2025.

Staff at Leighton Hospital in Crewe, Cheshire raised concerns about the couple’s behavior, suspecting drug influence and indifference towards the baby’s well-being. Tests revealed traces of cocaine in the infant’s system, leading to the conclusion that the substance caused the child’s unresponsiveness.

Fields and Jones confessed to using cocaine in front of the baby during police interviews. They also disclosed a previous incident where the child had a similar medical episode but recovered without medical attention. Investigations uncovered that Fields had purchased cocaine a day before the second incident. Both individuals pleaded guilty and were sentenced accordingly.

Jones received a suspended two-year sentence, along with 25 rehabilitation activity days, a mental health treatment requirement order, and 150 hours of unpaid work. Fields was sentenced to two years in prison. Following the court ruling, Sergeant Ann Muldowney of Cheshire Police emphasized the severe risks associated with Class A drugs like cocaine, particularly when exposed to children. Authorities urged the public to report any suspicions of child neglect or abuse for immediate investigation.
