Tragedy struck aboard a 12-day cruise from Australia to New Zealand as a passenger passed away under mysterious circumstances.

Authorities were alerted to the unexpected death on board the Anthem of the Seas vessel at around 1:40 am on Wednesday, March 25. The incident is currently under investigation.

The ship, which was carrying over 4,000 passengers and approximately 1,300 crew members, departed from Sydney on March 22 and was en route to Waitangi in the Bay of Islands. Its intended arrival date was Wednesday, April 1, as reported by the Daily Mail.

The Daily Mail reached out to the cruise operator, Royal Caribbean, for a statement regarding the incident.

Notably, the ship features a total of 16 decks and accommodates 2,090 staterooms.
