“Pharmacists Warn of Drug Shortages Amid Iran Tensions”

Published on

Pharmacists are advising Britain to consider storing medications due to Iran’s restrictions on the Strait of Hormuz. A significant number of common drugs, such as aspirin, paracetamol, ibuprofen, and various antibiotics, utilize petroleum-based components and other materials sourced from the Middle East. The Independent Pharmacies Association, representing 5,000 pharmacies in England and Wales, has reached out to Health Secretary Wes Streeting regarding this concern.

According to Dr. Leyla Hannbeck, the association’s chief executive, there are existing shortages of certain painkillers like co-codamol and opioids. She emphasized the vulnerability of global supply chains faced by community pharmacies. The tensions around the vital shipping route of the Strait of Hormuz have raised worries about potential disruptions to international trade and increased crude oil prices, directly impacting the availability of essential medicines.

The potential disruption in the drug supply chain stemming from the situation in Iran could affect crucial treatments relied upon by millions daily, including common medications for high blood pressure and cholesterol management to prevent cardiovascular incidents. Dr. Hannbeck highlighted the economic aspects of the UK’s pharmaceutical market, pointing out that the country’s low-priced generic medicines have made it less attractive for some manufacturers, potentially leading to supply issues.

She urged immediate action to ensure a stable supply of medicines for patients, including preventing the export or hoarding of identified scarce medications. In response, a Department of Health and Social Care spokesperson assured that the majority of licensed medicines in the UK are currently well-supplied. The government is investing in domestic medicine manufacturing to enhance supply resilience and is actively collaborating with partner countries to strengthen supply chains, safeguarding NHS services and patients.
