A Plymouth couple, Heather and Brian Ahern, faced a surprising incident when they were mistakenly blocked from using Sainsbury’s petrol stations in Plymouth and Hampshire due to an erroneous outstanding bill. This situation persisted for weeks, with the couple consistently denied service and even receiving threatening letters from solicitors.
After prolonged back-and-forth with Sainsbury’s management, the issue was eventually resolved. Sainsbury’s issued an apology to the Aherns and offered them £150 in vouchers as a goodwill gesture, although there was a hiccup when one of the vouchers failed to work at the Marsh Mills branch. Despite the resolution, the couple expressed strong dissatisfaction with how the situation unfolded.
The trouble began when Mrs. Ahern, 71, and her husband encountered a system crash at a Sainsbury’s filling station in Fareham last year, leading to confusion over payment for fuel. Despite promptly settling the bill the next day, they later found themselves barred from refueling due to their car being flagged for non-payment. This issue persisted, causing distress and inconvenience for the couple, who resorted to using other petrol stations.
Following an investigation, Sainsbury’s rectified the situation and offered Mrs. Ahern a £100 voucher, later supplemented with an additional £50 voucher. Despite the gesture, Mrs. Ahern expressed frustration over the series of events and emphasized the importance of being removed from Sainsbury’s system to prevent future occurrences.
Sainsbury’s confirmed providing a total of £150 in vouchers to Mrs. Ahern as a goodwill gesture. Mrs. Ahern, however, encountered further issues when attempting to use the vouchers, prompting Sainsbury’s to reimburse her and express regret over the situation. A spokesperson for Sainsbury’s acknowledged the incident, apologized for the lapse in service, and assured steps were taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The couple’s ordeal serves as a reminder of the importance of accurate record-keeping and effective communication to prevent misunderstandings and unnecessary distress for customers.
