“PM Carney Warns Against Shifting Focus from US”

Published on

Prime Minister Mark Carney is cautioning Canadians about the consequences of shifting focus away from the United States, emphasizing that while there will be costs involved, the alternative would be more detrimental. Carney, in a recently released video following the initiation of Canada’s retaliatory tariffs, reiterated the country’s strategy to counter the U.S. trade war by forging new trade agreements with other nations to reduce dependence on the U.S.

“We have all the necessary resources to pivot and thrive,” Carney stated. “Although there will be a cost associated with this shift, taking action is far preferable to maintaining the status quo.” Carney’s video message is part of a series he started last spring to keep Canadians informed about government policies and responses to U.S. trade measures.

The Prime Minister underscored that the objective of these policies is to emerge stronger and more resilient, ensuring that no nation can dictate terms to Canada and allowing Canadians to lead their lives as they see fit. He accused the U.S. of attempting to impose restrictions that would hinder Canada’s trade with other countries and undermine efforts to promote and safeguard the French language and culture.

Amid calls from the Federal Conservatives for transparency regarding the abandoned deal with Canada and an early recall of Parliament, Carney emphasized the importance of honesty in negotiations with the U.S. President. He highlighted that Trump’s tariffs were specifically aimed at harming certain Canadian sectors, such as steel, aluminum, auto, and lumber, affecting workers in Ontario, Quebec, and B.C. more significantly than those in Alberta and Saskatchewan.

In response to Trump’s trade actions, Canada implemented counter-tariffs targeting a range of U.S. products, matching the value of exports affected by the U.S. tariffs. Carney stressed the necessity of these tariffs to safeguard Canadian workers, businesses, and communities, stating that allowing tariff-free American goods into Canada while facing export charges was unacceptable.

Drawing a historical parallel, Carney referenced past trade conflicts with the U.S., highlighting the resilience and diversification efforts that strengthened Canada in the face of protectionist measures. He emphasized the importance of learning from history and adapting to changing trade dynamics to ensure Canada’s economic vitality and independence.
