“PM Unveils Plan to Revamp Education for SEND Children”

Published on

In my role as a mother to three school-aged children, two of whom are neurodivergent, I am closely following the government’s proposed changes to SEND provision, a topic of great interest to parents in similar situations.

Today, the Prime Minister is set to reveal plans for a long-awaited overhaul of the support system for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). The Department of Education aims to streamline the process, eliminating the current bureaucratic hurdles that families face in accessing relevant and effective support for their children. Additionally, there is a focus on increasing funding to mainstream schools, enabling them to provide more personalized assistance without the necessity of costly legal Educational Health Care Plans.

On the surface, these reforms appear positive, promising a more inclusive educational environment where all children’s needs can be adequately addressed. School leaders and educational institutions have already voiced their support for the proposed changes.

However, what stands out to me is the apparent lack of understanding regarding the significant challenges faced by parents of neurodiverse children. Many parents aspire for their children to attend mainstream schools, but often encounter difficulties due to their children’s sensory processing issues, making it challenging for them to adapt to the school environment.

Despite efforts by local schools to enhance support for SEND students, the existing school structure poses obstacles for many neurodiverse children. The sheer size of secondary schools, with student populations exceeding 1,000, and the limited resources available within the SEN system in mainstream settings, create significant hurdles.

Moreover, the traditional educational model in the UK, largely unchanged since Victorian times, presents inherent challenges for neurodivergent children. The transition from small primary schools to large secondary institutions, coupled with the lack of tailored support, can be overwhelming for many students, leading to disengagement and refusal to attend school.

In light of these issues, there is a call for the government to prioritize the establishment of schools with smaller class sizes and more personalized settings, rather than attempting to adapt an outdated and overburdened education system.

For families like mine, navigating the complexities of supporting neurodivergent children in the current system has been a challenging journey. Despite the progress made through individualized support and homeschooling, concerns remain about the potential impact of proposed changes on children’s legal protections and access to tailored educational support.

As a parent, I share the apprehension felt by many families across the country about the implications of the proposed reforms. The goal for all parents is to ensure the well-being and success of their children, and it is essential that any changes made to the education system prioritize the individual needs and challenges faced by neurodivergent students to truly enhance their educational experience and outcomes.
