Portugal is set to pay tribute to their late player, Diogo Jota, often referred to as their “extra man,” on the anniversary of his tragic passing. As Cristiano Ronaldo and the team gear up for their World Cup match against Croatia in Toronto, the date in Canada will still be July 2, while in Europe, it will have turned to July 3 – marking one year since the Liverpool and Portugal striker lost his life in a fatal car accident.
Jota, aged 28, along with his brother Andre Silva, tragically perished in Spain when their Lamborghini crashed and caught fire. Just days before the accident, Jota had married his long-time partner, Rute Cardaso. The anniversary of his death was commemorated by his wife sharing their wedding speech online.
In remembrance of Jota, tributes are planned at Anfield, where fans will pay their respects, and a permanent memorial named ‘Forever 20’ is being constructed outside the stadium. Portugal’s head coach, Roberto Martinez, expressed the importance of honoring Jota, calling him “our light” and naming him an honorary member of the World Cup squad.
Jota, who scored 14 goals in 49 international appearances, would have likely been part of this year’s squad. The team, including midfielder Vitinha, is motivated to win the match not only for themselves but also for Jota and their country. The players are wearing wristbands with Jota’s name throughout the tournament.
Reflecting on the impact of Jota’s passing, coach Martinez described it as a daily challenge but also a moment for celebration. Jota’s parents were visibly moved during a tribute at Portugal’s opening match. Liverpool teammate Andy Robertson spoke about the profound effect of Jota’s death on the team.
Jota’s widow sent a heartfelt message to Scotland’s defender Robertson, thanking him for honoring Jota during the tournament. At Liverpool, Jota’s jersey number has been retired, and a permanent memorial for both brothers is in the works outside the stadium. Jota, who was signed from Wolves for £45 million, left a lasting legacy at the club, scoring 65 goals in 182 appearances, including winning the Premier League.
