A tragic incident unfolded when a pregnant woman fell from a 10-story building, saying “I’m off” before the fall. Despite the mother’s demise, her baby miraculously survived the ordeal.

The incident took place at Shakespeare Towers in Leeds on October 22, 2024. Emma Atkinson, a mother of five who was more than seven months pregnant, had visited her father on the ninth floor of the building.

According to statements presented at the inquest, Emma Atkinson sat by a window, removed the safety catches, and opened it fully, appearing to seek fresh air. Moments later, she declared, “I’m off,” before falling out of the window.

Emergency services were quick to respond, and despite efforts to save Emma Atkinson, she did not survive the fall. However, medical personnel successfully delivered her baby via emergency Caesarean section upon arrival at Leeds General Infirmary.

Investigations by West Yorkshire Police ruled out any foul play in the incident. The coroner’s narrative conclusion stated that while Emma Atkinson’s actions were deliberate, her intent could not be conclusively determined as either suicide or accident.
