“Premier League and Sports Entities Team Up to Support Men’s Mental Health”

Published on

Major sports entities, including the Premier League, are joining forces to enhance men’s mental well-being.

Under a new initiative spearheaded by the Government, a week-long effort is underway to address the issue of male isolation crisis, promote social interactions, and emphasize the importance of mental health support for men. In England, one in four boys and young men aged 11-16 admit to experiencing loneliness occasionally, frequently, or consistently. Suicide ranks high among the causes of death for men under 50 years old.

The government’s initiative, known as Team Up, is a week-long campaign scheduled to take place from January 26 to February 1, 2026, across the UK. Officials are deeply alarmed that without positive environments, young men are at risk of isolation, mental health challenges, and exposure to negative influences encountered online.

The Premier League, EFL, Rugby Football Union, England & Wales Cricket Board, and Movember are all anticipated to lend their support to the campaign. Leading up to the campaign launch, the Government is urging elite clubs, grassroots teams, professional athletes, amateurs, and fans to actively participate.

Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy remarked: “Too many young boys and men in our nation are facing challenges. It appears that they lack access to suitable places or individuals to confide in for the necessary help and support.”

“Many are also being drawn into negative online spaces, where they are exposed to content reinforcing harmful stereotypes about masculinity, with potentially severe consequences.”

“However, sports carry a unique ability to address these issues and create a meaningful impact. Sports can help young men establish positive connections in real life, foster camaraderie, confidence, and self-assurance. The ‘Team Up’ campaign will convey the simple message that everyone deserves a support system and should be encouraged to tackle life’s obstacles.”

Through the National Youth Strategy, the Government is allocating £500 million to develop up to 250 new or renovated youth facilities. Tracy Herd, Director of Men’s Health (Europe) at Movember, stated: “We are thrilled to back Team Up Week and collaborate with DCMS and sports partners to emphasize the role of physical activity in aiding young men’s mental health.”
