Prince William has commemorated the third anniversary of his ambitious initiative to address homelessness by revealing a new funding injection exceeding £7 million.
The Duke of Cambridge will make a powerful call today to elevate his Homewards project to greater heights in the battle against homelessness. Over the past year, the initiative has allocated £1.9 million to six UK locations, supplementing this with an additional £3.5 million secured through grants and private donations.
The latest funding boost, totaling £7.7 million, includes new collaborations such as a £2.3 million investment in furniture from The Multibank, DfS, Bosch Home Appliances, IKEA, and B&Q. This partnership aims to aid individuals in establishing and maintaining tenancies to prevent homelessness.
In addition to the significant financial support, Lloyds Bank contributed £50 million last year to enable new lending for organizations dedicated to providing housing solutions. At a special event to mark the anniversary, Prince William will push Homewards to achieve new milestones, emphasizing the need to replicate successful strategies nationwide.
The Prince of Wales is set to emphasize the importance of tackling systemic failures that lead to homelessness and highlight the project’s efforts to prevent such issues. Through his Homewards initiative, William launched a five-year plan to combat homelessness comprehensively and assess the progress made thus far. The focus for the next two years will be on expanding successful interventions and developing a scalable model for broader application.
The primary goal is to transition more individuals into stable housing and employment while offering early support to prevent recurring homelessness instances. Homewards, now past its halfway mark, has already impacted over 2,400 people through community outreach and school programs, facilitated over 250 job placements, and assisted 73 individuals and families in securing stable residences.
William’s dedication to the cause stems from poignant childhood experiences visiting shelters with his late mother, Princess Diana. Through pilot initiatives in six key locations, including Newport, Lambeth, Belfast, Aberdeen, Sheffield, and the Dorset towns of Poole, Bournemouth, and Christchurch, Homewards supports individuals in finding stable housing and employment while reinforcing a shared responsibility approach to risk management.
Efforts are also underway to secure long-term funding alignment to sustain prevention strategies beyond the project’s five-year duration. At a high-profile event in London, Prince William will stress the collective effort needed to address homelessness, highlighting the importance of systemic solutions and preventative measures.
Dr. Peter Mackie, Executive Director of the Institute of Global Homelessness and a member of Homewards National Expert Panel, commended the project’s progress, noting the importance of collaborative efforts to prevent homelessness effectively.
Hazel Detsiny, Executive Director of Homelessness at The Royal Foundation, expressed optimism about the project’s impact so far, emphasizing the need for continued effort to achieve long-term change and prevent homelessness on a larger scale.
As Homewards progresses, ongoing evaluation and adaptation of strategies will play a crucial role in realizing sustainable outcomes. Prince William’s personal involvement, including visits to all project locations, underscores his commitment to combating homelessness. Notable supporters of the initiative include celebrities like Fara Williams, Gail Porter, Tyrone Mings, Geri Horner, Sir Bryn Terfel, and Sara Cox.
