The government is currently reassessing the sentences handed to three teenage boys who were spared prison time after being convicted of raping two girls. The boys, two aged 15 and one aged 14, were placed on youth rehabilitation orders (YRO) instead of being incarcerated. Additionally, the older boys were subjected to intensive supervision and surveillance (ISS). The trial, which took place at Southampton Crown Court, revealed that the girls were assaulted in two separate incidents in Fordingbridge, Hampshire, on November 26, 2024, and January 17, 2025.
Following widespread criticism from various political figures, including former Home Office minister Jess Phillips, concerns were raised about the perceived leniency of the sentences. Phillips expressed her disapproval, stating that the message conveyed by the sentences was concerning, especially considering the ordeal the young women had to endure during the trial.
Hampshire Police and Crime Commissioner Donna Jones expressed her dismay at the lenient sentences, offering support to the victims’ families if they wished to challenge the judicial decisions. She emphasized the need for a stronger focus on rehabilitation and prevention of such crimes through education on sexual violence and misogynistic behaviors.
The government has confirmed that multiple requests have been made to review the sentences under the Unduly Lenient Scheme. The attorney general’s office is now deliberating whether to seek a court review of the sentences, acknowledging the public outrage surrounding the case and expressing solidarity with the victims.
During the sentencing hearing, the boys received rehabilitation orders tailored to their individual circumstances. The judge highlighted the importance of considering the defendants’ ages and potential for rehabilitation while avoiding unnecessary criminalization. He acknowledged the impact of peer pressure in the offenses committed.
The judge commended the bravery of the victims for testifying and providing statements detailing the traumatic effects of the assaults. Despite the sentencing and imposed restrictions, he acknowledged that it could not erase the trauma experienced by the victims. The boys were also issued restraining orders and placed under curfews to prevent contact with the victims.
Prosecutors detailed the harrowing incidents, including the rape of the first girl after meeting one of the defendants on Snapchat, followed by the second defendant’s involvement and the subsequent distribution of videos of the assault. Similar events were described in the second incident involving the 14-year-old victim.
