Vladimir Putin has issued an order to evacuate a nuclear power plant due to concerns of a potential disaster, as per reports. The evacuation of Russians from the Bushehr nuclear power plant in Iran was directed by Putin. The construction work on two new reactors at the plant, being carried out by hundreds of Russian workers, has been paused following reports of nearby “explosions.”

Rosatom, Russia’s state nuclear energy corporation, is preparing for a second evacuation of its citizens, including family members and some staff, in the near future, as stated by Alexei Likhachev, the corporation’s head. The operational reactor at the site currently holds 72 tons of nuclear fuel, along with 210 tons of spent fuel, posing unsafe conditions for workers amidst reported explosions near the plant’s security perimeter.

Despite the risks, some workers are expected to remain at the site, with Putin personally overseeing security matters for Russian employees. The suspension of construction at the plant is a setback for Russia, as the project symbolized cooperation between the two nations. A group of 639 Russians are still present at the plant, while children of workers have been evacuated.

The Bushehr nuclear power plant, located approximately 745 miles south of Tehran, serves as Iran’s sole operational commercial nuclear facility, distinct from its controversial enrichment facilities. The region remains volatile, with concerns of potential strikes posing a significant regional threat due to the substantial amount of fissile material present at the site. All parties involved are urged to comprehend the catastrophic consequences such actions could entail, irrespective of their political affiliations.
