Vladimir Putin has issued a stern warning to Kyiv, threatening a major strike if drones interfere with his military parade in Moscow on Saturday. The Russian Defense Ministry advised civilians and diplomats to evacuate the city promptly in case of an attack by Volodymyr Zelensky, as it could trigger a swift and powerful retaliatory missile assault.
The warning from Russia suggests the deployment of the hypersonic Oreshnik missile, which Putin claims possesses destructive capabilities similar to a nuclear explosion when used in its standard mode. Putin has previously stated that a coordinated strike with multiple Oreshnik systems could rival the impact of a nuclear attack.
Amid concerns over Ukraine’s advanced drones and missiles, the Kremlin emphasized the potential threat posed by the Oreshnik missile, which reportedly also has a nuclear configuration. Plans to safeguard VIP spectators at the annual Victory Day parade involved utilizing Vladimir Lenin’s mausoleum on Red Square as a protective measure in case of an attack by Ukraine.
In a bid to ensure the safety of the parade, Putin announced a unilateral ceasefire for Friday and Saturday. However, Zelensky has vowed to respond in kind if Putin breaches the ceasefire. The Russian Defense Ministry affirmed its commitment to parade security and readiness to take necessary actions to thwart any disruptions.
The deadly Oreshnik missile has been deployed in previous strikes on Dnipro and Lliv, albeit with non-lethal warheads. Russia has scaled down the parade and considered using the Lenin Mausoleum as an emergency shelter for key attendees due to the perceived threat of an attack.
As tensions escalate, Ukraine has demonstrated its prowess in long-range strikes and territorial gains. Recent missile alerts in multiple Russian regions, including a strike on a defense facility in Cheboksary, highlight Ukraine’s growing capabilities. Kyiv’s successful drone attacks on Russian installations further underscore its military effectiveness.
Tragic incidents resulting from Russian strikes on Ukraine, such as the recent casualties in Poltava, illustrate the escalating violence in the conflict. Putin’s focus on the Moscow parade has led to concerns about troop redeployments and potential vulnerabilities along the front lines.
Despite Russia’s military maneuvers, its territorial control in Ukraine has diminished, with significant losses in personnel. The formidable Oreshnik system, which Russia introduced in late 2024, poses a considerable threat with its advanced ballistic missile technology. Putin’s assertion of the devastating impact of the Oreshnik system underscores the grave consequences of a potential strike.
It is evident that the situation remains volatile, with both sides engaging in military posturing and brinkmanship. The ongoing conflict underscores the high stakes and potential for further escalation in the region.
