Quebec Demands Answers After 4-Year-Old’s Tragic Death

Published on

Quebec officials are expressing strong disapproval following the tragic passing of a four-year-old boy in Ivujivik, Nunavik, amid allegations that the child was denied necessary medical care.

In a press statement on Thursday, Sol Zanetti, a representative for Québec Solidaire, is demanding explanations regarding the demise of Jusi Padlayat, who reportedly died on August 3 after his parents sought help for his stomach discomfort at the local clinic multiple times without receiving treatment.

According to an interview with La Presse, Padlayat’s grandmother, Annie Mangiuk, revealed that the family’s concerns were dismissed by medical personnel who advised administering Advil or Tylenol to the boy. Mangiuk recounted that Padlayat was discovered unconscious on August 1 and was subsequently transferred to the local nursing station before being transferred to the Montreal Children’s Hospital, where he passed away two days later.

Zanetti condemned the prolonged suffering of a child as unacceptable and raised concerns about possible neglect, urging for a thorough investigation, particularly if there are indications of systemic racism within the healthcare system.

The Quebec Liberal Party (QLP) has also called for enhancements in healthcare services in northern regions, proposing increased telemedicine options as a viable solution to address the challenges faced by remote communities.

Echoing similar sentiments, the Joyce’s Principle Office emphasized the need for genuine empathy and immediate actions in providing services to Indigenous populations, drawing parallels between Padlayat’s tragic incident and the case of Joyce Echaquan, whose maltreatment at a hospital in Joliette brought attention to systemic racism in healthcare.

Both the Inuulitsivik Health Centre and the Nunavik Regional Board of Health and Social Services have confirmed internal and external investigations will be conducted in response to Padlayat’s death. Furthermore, the Quebec coroner’s office is actively looking into the matter, although specific details surrounding the circumstances leading to the boy’s death remain undisclosed.

The Montreal Children’s Hospital refrained from commenting on individual cases, citing privacy concerns.
