In her address to fellow MPs, the Chancellor highlighted that both Reform UK and the Conservatives were in agreement about reinstating the two-child benefit cap, a move that would adversely affect nearly half a million children and was deemed a moral dilemma by Ms. Reeves.

She emphasized that both parties were aligned in their stance to push hundreds of thousands of children back into poverty. Additionally, she pointed out that former Tory politicians defecting to Farage’s party brought failed Tory policies along with them. Ms. Reeves asserted that only the Labour Party had the appropriate economic strategy for families and the nation, regardless of changes in party affiliations.

During her Spring Statement, Ms. Reeves pledged that voters would see an increase of £1,000 per year in their pockets before the next election. She also updated MPs on growth predictions by the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR), affirming the government’s sound economic blueprint. The OBR anticipated a 1.1% growth in gross domestic product for 2026, slightly lower than their previous forecast, but revised upward forecasts for 2027 and 2028 to 1.6%.

Ms. Reeves stressed that the government’s economic plan was well-suited for the country, particularly amidst recent global uncertainties. She highlighted positive indicators such as decreased inflation, reduced borrowing, improved living standards, and a growing economy. However, the ongoing Middle East conflict and subsequent spikes in oil and gas prices overshadowed her economic proposals.
