“Racist Councillors Face Resignation Calls”

Published on

Elected local councillors accused of racism are under pressure to resign shortly after winning seats for the Reform party. Daniel Devaney emerged as the top vote-getter in Bradford despite making derogatory remarks about Muslims, calling them ‘pure scum’. He attributed his comments to being in a bad mood while watching TV, expressing regret and offering to step down from his position.

The Mirror highlighted Devaney’s background, having previously served in the Navy, Army, and Air Force Institutes and even being pictured alongside Prince Charles on HMS Invincible.

In response to scrutiny over his Facebook posts, Devaney admitted his behavior was inappropriate and stood by his support for Enoch Powell while apologizing for his offensive remarks.

Despite claiming to assist his Asian neighbors and emphasizing his desire to contribute to his community, Devaney later announced that he was no longer in the running for office. This decision followed criticism from Susan Hinchcliffe, the former leader of Bradford Council, who denounced the offensive comments made by Devaney prior to the election.

Another case involved Stuart Prior, who won seats on both the county and district councils in Essex, despite revelations of racist remarks he made online. The disclosures, unveiled through an investigation by the Mirror and anti-racism group HOPE not hate, raised concerns about Prior’s conduct. Reform, the party he represents, acknowledged the scrutiny surrounding Prior’s posts and stated they were examining the situation.

HOPE not hate representative Georgie Laming criticized Prior’s language as being among the most racially charged among all Reform UK candidates exposed. Laming advocated for swift action against Prior, condemning his behavior.

Meanwhile, allegations were made against Jay Leslie Cooper, a newly elected council member in Merseyside, for his controversial remarks on social media, including minimizing the Holocaust. Despite facing criticism, Cooper was elected and Reform mentioned that an investigation was underway regarding his conduct.

Glenn Gibbins, elected to represent Hylton Castle ward on Sunderland City Council, was suspended pending an investigation into his past remarks demeaning the Nigerian community and displaying misogyny. The allegations against Gibbins have been taken seriously by Reform, with deputy leader Darren Grimes affirming that the party was investigating the matter.
