Rak-Su, the group that won The X Factor in 2017, recently discussed their journey to fame and shared insights about working alongside mentor Simon Cowell. Comprising childhood friends Ashley Fongho, Jamaal Shurland, Myles Stephenson, and Mustafa Rahimtulla from Watford, the R&B group achieved success with their winning track ‘Dimelo,’ which reached Number Two on the charts. Notably, this was the first winner’s single written by the winners themselves.

Since their X Factor victory, Rak-Su has released two albums and numerous singles, with Myles even appearing on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! in 2019. The group, now signed with Champions Music and Entertainment, is set to launch a new album as a trio following Mustafa’s departure in 2020 to focus on his mental well-being.

Reflecting on their X Factor experience, Rak-Su members praised Simon Cowell for respecting their artistic vision and allowing them creative freedom. Despite occasional input on performances and music tweaks, Simon trusted the group’s direction. The band considers their X Factor journey a pivotal moment, with Ashley recalling the overwhelming reactions from fans post-win.

While The X Factor has ended, Rak-Su believes talent shows remain beneficial for emerging artists, providing a platform for exposure. Jamaal emphasized the importance of knowing one’s artistic identity to navigate the industry successfully. Myles acknowledged the industry’s commercial challenges and the impact on young artists’ careers.
