American rapper Rick Ross, whose real name is William Roberts II, was taken into custody in Miami Beach for battery charges related to an alleged domestic violence incident, as confirmed by local authorities to The Associated Press. Ross faces one felony count of battery by strangulation and a misdemeanor battery charge. He was released on bail after posting a cash bond, as shown in online court records.
According to reports, an unnamed woman informed local detectives that she was residing with Ross when, on August 28, he accused her of infidelity and physically assaulted her. The woman claimed Ross repeatedly struck her and choked her with her shirt collar, ultimately slamming her into a wall. The incident was reported on Tuesday, leading to Ross surrendering himself at the local police station on Thursday morning.
In an Instagram story posted from a vehicle on Thursday, Ross vehemently maintained his innocence, dismissing the allegations as fabricated. Legal representatives for Ross, in a statement to CBC News, asserted his innocence and disclosed that he has pleaded not guilty to the charges, urging the public to reserve judgment and allow the legal process to unfold.
Ross, a prominent rapper based in Miami since the 2000s, gained fame with his debut single “Hustlin'” in 2006 and later signed with Jay Z’s Def Jam Records label. His first album, “Port of Miami,” debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 chart. In 2008, he established his own music label, Maybach Music Group, which includes artists such as Meek Mill and French Montana. An arraignment for Ross’s case is set for October 22.
