Rare Roy Keane World Cup Shirt to be Auctioned for £20,000

Published on

An unexpected World Cup football shirt that gained attention for its rarity is set to hit the auction block, with an estimated value of £20,000. The shirt belonged to ITV pundit Roy Keane, who famously exited the Ireland squad before the 2002 Japan World Cup, causing a stir in the football world. Despite Keane’s departure, his tournament shirt had already been customized with his name and number.

This unique piece of memorabilia was safeguarded by the team’s kitman, who brought it back from Japan and later passed it on to his superior. For the past 24 years, the shirt has been stored in Dublin and is now being offered for sale by Jonathan Courtenay, the former Umbro distributor in Ireland.

Reflecting on the shirt’s history, Courtenay mentioned, “I’ve owned the shirt for decades, showing it to various individuals during that time. As much as I once cherished it, I now feel ready to part with it, as everything holds value, and my daughter has limited interest in my collection.”

The auction, conducted by Budds in Wellingborough, Northants, will coincide with the commencement of the World Cup. David Convery, head of sporting memorabilia at Budds, emphasized the significance of Keane’s shirt, describing it as a symbol of a pivotal moment in football history. The auction will feature an array of iconic football items, including shirts worn by legendary players and memorabilia from historic matches, showcasing the rich heritage of the sport.
