A significant number of police officers gathered at a local high school and the surrounding area in Prince George, B.C., for an emergency response training exercise conducted by the RCMP. The training involved both uniformed and undercover officers, as well as police vehicles, to simulate an active threat scenario using actors. According to Cpl. Jennifer Cooper, the media relations officer for Prince George RCMP, this realistic approach aimed to prepare officers for the intensity of real-life situations.

Residents in the vicinity were advised to expect loud noises, shouting, and commotion during the dynamic simulated scenario. Cooper clarified that the training at the high school was not a direct response to a previous school shooting incident but rather part of the regular RCMP training regimen. The selected school building, vacant of students during the summer, provided an ideal setting for conducting various training scenarios.

Insp. Chris Riddle, the Prince George RCMP operations officer, highlighted that the exercise brought together multiple specialized units, including the North District Emergency Response Team, Crisis Negotiation Team, and General Investigative Section. The training scenarios focused on responding to situations where individuals pose harm to others, aiming to equip officers with the skills needed to effectively address threats and protect the public.

Both Cooper and Riddle emphasized the value of immersive training experiences in preparing officers for the challenges they may encounter in the line of duty. Cooper shared her past experience as an actor in a similar training exercise, underscoring the importance of understanding the daily realities faced by law enforcement officers. Riddle expressed a commitment to organizing more such training events in the future to enhance the skills and readiness of Prince George officers.
