“Reckless Driver Sentenced: Teen’s Death on M65”

Published on

A tragic incident occurred when a young woman lost her life due to a reckless driver crashing his car into a motorway barrier at speeds exceeding 100mph. Demi-Leigh Davies, 17, sustained fatal injuries in the accident. Leon Callaghan, 19, was responsible for the crash, having driven a Seat Ibiza into the central reservation of the M65.

Callaghan was recently sentenced to five years and three months in prison for causing death by dangerous driving. The judge criticized his extremely risky behavior of reaching 113mph on the motorway near Burnley, Lancashire. The court highlighted Callaghan’s lack of remorse, as he blamed external factors for the incident instead of taking responsibility for his actions.

Demi-Leigh’s mother expressed her profound sorrow after losing her daughter, describing her as a vibrant young woman with a promising future. The tragic event also left two other young passengers injured but recovering. Callaghan, who was 17 at the time of the crash, had been driving his friends home late at night when the accident occurred.

The crash unfolded swiftly as Callaghan’s car veered out of control and collided with the central reservation before rolling over multiple times. The aftermath revealed the severity of the impact, with the passengers in the back seat being ejected from the vehicle due to not wearing seatbelts. Passersby who witnessed the wreckage promptly assisted in locating the victims.

Despite the efforts to save her, Demi-Leigh succumbed to her injuries at the hospital. The post-mortem examination detailed the extent of her injuries, attributing her death to severe blood loss from the traumatic impact. Callaghan, who claimed to have no memory of driving at such high speeds, was found to have driven the car at dangerous velocities close to its limit.

In the court proceedings, Callaghan’s defense highlighted his previous good character but also mentioned his diagnoses of ADHD and autism affecting his decision-making. As a father expecting another child, Callaghan was sentenced to detention and a lengthy driving ban, emphasizing the devastating consequences of his reckless actions on the victims and their families.
