“Record Crackdown on County Lines Gangs: 3,000 Drug Lines Closed”

Published on

Law enforcement has intensified efforts against county lines gangs that exploit vulnerable children to engage in drug trafficking and weapon carrying. Over the past year, a record number of criminal actions have been taken, resulting in the closure of nearly 3,000 drug dealing lines and the confiscation of close to 1,500 knives.

In collaboration with the British Transport Police (BTP), a significant operation was conducted at Stratford railway station in east London. More than 40 police officers, including undercover personnel, drug detection dogs, and safeguarding experts, participated in the operation. This initiative led to the interception and support of a missing vulnerable child associated with county lines activities.

During the operation, six individuals were arrested, including one for the possession of class A drugs with intent to supply. Policing Minister Sarah Jones, who witnessed the operation, emphasized the violent nature of county lines crimes and the exploitation of children by criminal organizations for drug distribution.

Detective Superintendent David Udomhiaye of BTP highlighted the continuous efforts of uniformed and plainclothes officers to combat criminal gangs operating on the railways. He stressed the significance of disrupting these gangs that exploit vulnerable individuals, including young children, to facilitate their illicit activities.

BTP adopts a safeguarding approach supported by charity organizations like Catch22, which focuses on addressing vulnerabilities in youths targeted by these criminal groups. By understanding specific vulnerabilities and offering incentives like money and status, gangs entice young individuals into their operations.

Amanda Radley, the safeguarding lead for BTP’s county lines taskforce, emphasized the importance of avoiding the criminalization of exploited children and seeking non-criminal justice outcomes that provide support and protection. The County Lines Programme, supported by the Home Office, plays a vital role in the government’s efforts to reduce knife crime in the coming years.

By prioritizing intervention and support for victims of exploitation, law enforcement aims to dismantle the networks that perpetuate these harmful activities. The collaborative approach between authorities, charities, and community organizations underscores the commitment to safeguarding vulnerable individuals and disrupting criminal operations.
