Reform UK faces strong criticism for proposing a deportation force reminiscent of Donald Trump’s policies. Zia Yusuf, endorsed by Nigel Farage for Home Secretary, revealed plans for the UK Deportation Command capable of detaining over 20,000 individuals simultaneously, mirroring Trump’s ICE tactics that have caused significant divisions in the US.
Yusuf intends to eliminate Indefinite Leave to Remain, potentially leading to the deportation of numerous legal migrants. He announced in Dover, Kent, that an RAF aircraft would be on standby for removal operations.
Natasha Tsangarides from Freedom from Torture condemned Yusuf’s proposals, labeling them as ethno-nationalist and authoritarian, warning of the destructive impact on families and communities. She emphasized the negative consequences of such policies, drawing parallels to the divisive tactics seen in the US under ICE raids.
Yusuf defended his plan to establish a unit dedicated to tracking down and deporting migrants, aiming to remove up to 288,000 individuals annually while framing illegal migration as an invasion.
Amnesty International UK and the Liberal Democrats expressed strong opposition to the proposed deportation force, cautioning against adopting ICE-like practices due to the potential for fear, discrimination, and lack of accountability, which could jeopardize freedoms and societal harmony.
Despite comparisons to ICE’s controversial actions, Yusuf refuted concerns about similar outcomes in the UK, asserting that the deportation program would not lead to the kind of turmoil witnessed in the US.
The US recently faced violence following incidents involving ICE agents, prompting criticism of the force’s aggressive enforcement methods.
