“Released Essex Boys Murderer Spotted After 29 Years”

Published on

A man who was sentenced to life in prison for the Essex Boys murders has been photographed publicly for the first time since his release. Michael Steele, aged 83, was recently seen in the county after spending nearly 29 years behind bars for the killing of three drug dealers in a Range Rover. Clad in a grey fleece and jeans, Steele was observed engaging in DIY activities outside a residence in his former neighborhood.

After serving his sentence for the murders of Tony Tucker, Pat Tate, and Craig Rolfe in Rettendon, Essex, Steele was finally freed in May last year. Alongside his friend Jack Whomes, 64, Steele was convicted of using a shotgun to commit the killings. However, doubts linger regarding the validity of the convictions, prompting the Criminal Cases Review Commission to revisit the case for the third time following an investigation report submitted by retired Metropolitan detective David McKelvey.

McKelvey has urged the CCRC to conduct forensic testing on critical evidence, such as shotgun shell casings and items like a sweet wrapper and water bottle found in the Range Rover. Despite concerns raised, Essex Police auctioned the vehicle post the convictions of Steele and Whomes.

Steele, portrayed by actor Billy Murray in a movie about the murders, was eventually released after the Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood’s application for reconsideration was rejected. Following a Parole Board hearing in November 2024, it was determined that Steele posed no immediate risk to the community upon release.

Allegations of potential miscarriage of justice have arisen, suggesting that another individual referred to as “Mr D” may have been the true perpetrator of the crimes. The report also questions the credibility of a key witness and highlights discrepancies in the investigation, including untested evidence and omitted testimonies.

Despite the convictions being largely based on the testimony of a fraudster named Darren Nicholls, new evidence and concerns over police conduct have sparked a reevaluation of the case. Nicholls claimed Steele orchestrated the murders due to a prior dispute over drugs, but recent revelations suggest a different narrative involving other individuals.

The ongoing review by the CCRC and the collaboration between Essex Police and investigative bodies aim to shed light on the complexities surrounding the case. The tragic events that transpired have not only impacted the lives of the victims but have also raised significant questions about the integrity of the legal process and the reliability of witness testimonies.
