Tributes are being honored for an accomplished Blue Peter host who was dismissed before his untimely passing. Michael Sundin, a trampolining prodigy at the age of 12, secured his role as a Blue Peter presenter in 1984. Before joining the show, he showcased his talents in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats and portrayed Tik-Tok in Disney’s Return To Oz.
Michael’s journey on Blue Peter started when he caught the eye of producers during an interview with Janet Ellis. He quickly gained fame for his adventurous segments, including visits to film sets and Elton John’s home, after taking over from Peter Duncan. Despite his popularity, Michael’s tenure on the show was short-lived, with reports suggesting his contract was not renewed. Tragically, he passed away at 28 due to an Aids-related illness.
Remembered as a vibrant personality, Michael faced public scrutiny for his sexuality during his time on Blue Peter. While his exit was officially attributed to viewer disinterest, speculations arose about the role of his sexual orientation in his departure. Following his time on Blue Peter, Michael pursued acting, appearing in various productions and even featuring in Rick Astley’s music video.
The Elstree Project recently paid tribute to Michael’s role as Tik-Tok in Return to Oz, highlighting his exceptional performance under challenging conditions. Despite his significant contributions, Michael’s passing received minimal acknowledgment on Blue Peter, underlining the stigma of that era. His work on Return to Oz showcased his unique skills as a suit performer, crucial for bringing characters to life on screen.
After Michael’s death, fellow Blue Peter presenter Yvette Fielding, along with colleagues John Leslie and Caron Keating, mourned his loss and remembered him as a talented individual gone too soon.
