A seasoned rock climber met a tragic end by falling 66 feet down a mountain slope. Will Stanhope sustained a critical head injury while tackling the well-known Rutabaga route on Stawamus Chief mountain in Canada.
The 39-year-old climber was initially in stable condition when taken to the hospital but sadly passed away ten days later on April 23. His family shared the heartbreaking news of his demise.
In their statement, they expressed, “With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our dear Will. His fatal head injury resulted from a fall on the Rutabaga route on the Squamish Chief.”
Will was known for his daring spirit, exceptional memory, and captivating storytelling. Described as a kind and humorous individual, he found solace in climbing and considered the climbing community his family.
His family conveyed gratitude to all those who shared in his adventures and cherished him, inviting them to celebrate his life in Squamish later this spring. The BC Emergency Health Services responded to the incident on April 13 at around 3 pm.
Hailing from Squamish, British Columbia, Canada, Will was renowned for his free solo climbing, a practice of ascending without safety equipment. Throughout his life, he contributed to the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides.
