Residents in three communities on a popular tourist island have been instructed to remain in their homes due to the threat of possible attacks by Iran and its allies. The authorities in Paphos, located in southwest Cyprus, issued the directive for residents in Timi, Acheleia, and Mandria following guidance from the Cyprus Civil Defense, as confirmed by local officials.

Paphos Airport has now resumed regular operations after a recent drone incident near Britain’s RAF Akrotiri. The airport, situated approximately 60 kilometers from the base that was targeted by an unmanned drone, had been temporarily evacuated along with the Akrotiri Municipal District as a precautionary measure based on information provided by the Cypriot National Guard, according to the country’s Interior Ministry.

Deputy mayor of Timi, Giorgos Polykarpou, mentioned on Monday that residents in the three communities were advised to stay indoors and limit unnecessary travel. Authorities also assisted students and parents in returning home from Timi Regional Primary School, which caters to multiple nearby areas, as reported by the Cyprus News Agency.

Following the drone incident on Monday, families of British military personnel were relocated from Akrotiri as a safety measure. Defence Secretary John Healey stated that there were no injuries and minimal damage occurred at the base. He emphasized that the incident exemplified the perilous nature of the attacks carried out by Iran and its affiliates.

A government spokesperson in Cyprus disclosed that two additional unmanned drones heading towards the base were intercepted on Monday.

It is estimated that around 300,000 British citizens are currently in countries at risk of Iranian actions, with 102,000 individuals registering their whereabouts with the Foreign Office as authorities devised contingency strategies, including potential large-scale evacuations.
