Speculations about a rift between Rihanna and Beyoncé had circulated, stemming from rumors of an alleged affair between Rihanna and Jay-Z back in 2005. However, it was later revealed that the claims were fabricated as a publicity stunt.

Despite both artists dominating the music charts, tensions seemed to rise when Beyoncé released her Formation album shortly after Rihanna’s Anti album. Rihanna’s Anti album, released after a gap since her previous work in 2012, faced some controversy regarding Grammy nominations.
