“Rising Type 2 Diabetes in Young Women Spurs Concern”

Published on

Type 2 diabetes is on the rise among young women, as per recent data, indicating a concerning trend possibly linked to inadequate follow-up care for women developing diabetes during pregnancy.

Recent analysis by Diabetes UK reveals a faster increase in this condition among younger adult women compared to older women. This surge may be attributed to gestational diabetes (GD), a condition where pregnant women struggle to produce sufficient insulin, leading to elevated blood sugar levels.

While GD typically disappears after childbirth, individuals face a heightened risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Colette Marshall, CEO of Diabetes UK, expressed concerns about the lack of follow-up care for women who develop GD during pregnancy, emphasizing the need for attention to this issue.

According to Diabetes UK’s findings, between 2017/18 and 2023/24, the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes in women under 40 surged by 47%, surpassing the 22% increase among women aged 40 to 79. GD affects approximately 10% to 20% of pregnant women.

Proper postpartum care is crucial for women with GD, including HbA1c blood tests within six to 13 weeks after delivery, followed by annual tests to monitor blood sugar levels. However, a recent audit by NHS England revealed that only 57% of women underwent annual HbA1c testing post-GD.

Furthermore, the audit indicated that within a year, 11% of women with GD developed prediabetes, and over a 10-year period, 15% progressed to type 2 diabetes. Colette stressed the need for preventive measures, noting the rapid increase in type 2 diabetes among young women.

Amidst these concerns, Diabetes UK has urged Women’s Health Minister Baroness Merron to take immediate steps to enhance postnatal support for individuals with GD. It is essential to provide comprehensive information and care to women at risk, ensuring their well-being during and after pregnancy.
