As the heatwave persists, many individuals are flocking to beaches, lakes, and rivers to seek relief from the scorching temperatures. However, despite the hot weather on land, the water remains considerably cold and poses a significant drowning risk. To shed light on the dangers of cold water shock, a visit was made to the Extreme Environments Lab at the University of Portsmouth.
In a controlled experiment, I was immersed in a specialized plunge pool set at 15°C, reflecting the typical sea temperature in the UK. Prior to entering the water, my oxygen intake was at a standard rate of 0.3 liters. Upon immersion, it surged to 1.5 liters, a level that could lead to drowning if submerged. Additionally, my heart rate spiked from 80 to 110 beats per minute, potentially causing heart complications, even in younger individuals. Cold water shock, inducing gasping or heart failure, is responsible for the majority of drownings.
Extended exposure to cold water also impacts dexterity, as demonstrated by a decrease in typing speed after spending time in the water. Infrared cameras revealed a noticeable shift in body heat, transitioning from yellow (indicating warmth) to predominantly blue post-immersion.
Further challenges were encountered when navigating the pool’s flume feature, which simulates strong currents. Despite being a proficient swimmer, grappling against the cold water’s force for just three minutes left me fatigued and breathless.
Professor Mike Tipton, a renowned expert on extreme environments at the University of Portsmouth, emphasized the rapid onset of cold shock upon skin contact with cold water. He highlighted the critical need to swim parallel to the shore, stay within safe depths, and understand that swimming abilities in warm pools do not directly translate to open water scenarios.
In light of recent drowning incidents, including tragic losses during the heatwaves, safety organizations stress the importance of water vigilance. With temperatures expected to peak at 34°C in certain regions, health alerts have been issued, underscoring the potential strain on health services.
The RNLI advocates for the “Float to Live” method for individuals in distress, emphasizing relaxation in water and controlled breathing techniques. In emergencies, the ‘Phone, Float, Throw’ approach is recommended to aid those struggling in water.
Amid rising concerns over water safety, initiatives like the “Save Lives For Sam” campaign have been launched to address the escalating drowning crisis. Backed by various stakeholders, the campaign advocates for enhanced water safety education, public awareness campaigns, improved rescue equipment, legislative measures, and dedicated officials for water safety governance.
