Reform’s Robert Jenrick faces calls for an apology following allegations of sharing a manipulated quote from Labour’s new migration minister for political gain. The former Conservative member triggered backlash by sharing a video clip implying that Jo White, recently appointed to Shabana Mahmood’s Home Office team, expressed indifference towards stopping small boats. However, Ms. White later released the full audio recording clarifying that her actual statement was, “I don’t care who will stop the boats… my number one priority is to stop those boats.”
In a now-deleted post on a social media platform, Mr. Jenrick asserted that Ms. White had said, “I don’t care if we stop the boats,” and also criticized Andy Burnham for his stance on boat prevention efforts. While Mr. Jenrick eventually removed the post on Thursday morning, he defended his decision to share it.
Expressing her dismay, Ms. White shared the authentic recording of her remarks to constituents, accusing Robert Jenrick of distorting her words deliberately to deceive the public. She demanded an immediate retraction of the false claim and a formal apology from Reform.
Despite the deletion of his post, Mr. Jenrick has not issued an apology. Labour MP Jacob Collier condemned the dissemination of the altered audio clip, labeling it as a sign of desperation and a departure from fair democratic discourse. Similarly, former Home Office minister Mike Tapp, under Keir Starmer’s leadership, called for an apology from Robert Jenrick for spreading misinformation about a fellow Labour Minister.
In an interview with Talk TV’s Jeremy Kyle, Mr. Jenrick explained that he received the clip from individuals present at the meeting and defended his decision to share it publicly. He later deleted the post to give Ms. White the benefit of the doubt, stating his willingness to see how she responds.
When questioned about the appropriateness of his actions, Mr. Jenrick maintained that he did not believe he had erred but expressed readiness to consider alternative perspectives. A spokesperson for Reform UK pointed fingers at news outlet Guido Fawkes, suggesting that the truncated quote shared by Mr. Jenrick originated from their reporting. Meanwhile, Guido Fawkes defended their coverage, emphasizing the need for thorough reading of their content before citing it.
