“Robin Williams’s Children Fight Unauthorized AI Representations”

Published on

Robin Williams’s children have reactivated the Instagram account of the late actor and comedian to counter the proliferation of unauthorized AI representations of their father. Following Williams’s passing on August 11, 2014, due to Lewy body dementia, his offspring, Zak, Zelda, and Cody Williams, penned a post on Monday, marking the first activity on the “therobinwilliams” Instagram profile since July 31, 2014.

The trio expressed their intention to maintain a secure and reliable space where the content shared accurately portrays their father’s legacy with sincerity and compassion. They emphasized their desire to share his exceptional talent and humor, reminiscing about the moments that brought laughter to them and countless others while honoring his remarkable life and work, which continues to inspire and entertain people globally.

Williams had a distinguished career in film, television, and theater. He gained initial fame through the television series “Mork & Mindy” (1978-82) and starred in renowned movies such as “Good Morning Vietnam” (1987), “Dead Poets Society” (1989), “Mrs. Doubtfire” (1993), and “Jumanji” (1995). His accolades include an Academy Award for best supporting actor for “Good Will Hunting” (1997) and a special achievement Golden Globe Award for voicing Genie in “Aladdin” (1992).

In recent times, AI-generated videos featuring Williams have surfaced online, depicting him in various scenarios like podcasts, stand-up comedy acts, motivational speeches, and even commenting on the dinosaurs in “Jurassic Park.” Notably, these videos, created using OpenAI’s Sora application, prompted concerns leading to the app’s closure in March after facing backlash from estate representatives concerning the misuse of public figures’ likenesses.

Zelda Williams, an actor and director, has consistently opposed AI recreations of her father, urging fans to refrain from sharing such content due to its inappropriate nature. In a recent Instagram story, she explained that reactivating her father’s Instagram account aims to combat the misuse of AI by providing a platform for genuine clips and photos of him, deterring the widespread abuse of his voice and image in the digital realm.

While some, like actor Matthew Lawrence, who appeared alongside Williams in “Mrs. Doubtfire,” express interest in utilizing AI to preserve Williams’s iconic voice, they emphasize the importance of obtaining the family’s consent for any such projects. Similarly, other public figures, including Bernice King, daughter of Martin Luther King Jr., have voiced disapproval of using AI to replicate their loved ones without proper authorization.

The emergence of AI-generated versions of deceased actors, such as Val Kilmer, set a precedent for digital replication in the entertainment industry, with Kilmer’s estate permitting his digital likeness to star in the upcoming film “As Deep As the Grave” and receiving compensation for the portrayal. This trend underscores the ongoing debate surrounding the ethical and legal implications of AI technology in creating virtual representations of individuals posthumously.
