A young man faced life-threatening injuries following an explosion caused by a malfunctioning robot vacuum at his residence, as disclosed by his mother. Lachie Perrem, 25, sustained severe burns covering 75% of his body when the vacuum suddenly caught fire in his home on Airgate Close in Brabham, located in Perth’s northeast, on July 2. He was swiftly taken to Fiona Stanley Hospital and has undergone multiple surgical procedures since then.
Visual evidence post-explosion depicted shattered windows, charred walls, and extensive destruction throughout the kitchen and living room, with furniture obliterated, floorboards scorched, and debris strewn across the house.
Fiona Perrem, the victim’s mother, shared additional insights into the incident, explaining that a leak in the vacuum’s battery went unnoticed by her son. When he began cooking, the leaked battery triggered an explosion, placing him at the center of the catastrophic event.
The defective device has been dispatched to the state’s building and energy office for further examination.
According to the Department of Fire and Emergency Services Western Australia, lithium-ion batteries commonly found in robot vacuums pose significant risks. Spokespersons emphasized that the failure of lithium-ion batteries can lead to thermal runaway, characterized by violent cell bursting, release of harmful gases, and the initiation of intense fires.
Mr. Perrem has already undergone three surgeries following the incident, including treatments like wound debridement and skin grafts on various body parts. He temporarily lost his voice and anticipates additional surgeries in the upcoming months.
An update on the GoFundMe page on July 20 highlighted positive progress in Lachie’s recovery journey, with successful healing of grafts and improved mobility in his hands. The removal of his feeding tube marked a significant milestone, showcasing substantial advancements in his healing process.
