Rugby Star Jai Arrow Steps Back Due to MND

Published on

Rugby standout Jai Arrow has made the decision to step back from the Australian National Rugby League due to a diagnosis of motor neurone disease (MND) at the age of 30.

Arrow revealed that after a prolonged period of medical evaluations, he was informed of the diagnosis, with the disease now affecting various aspects of his daily life. The South Sydney Rabbitohs player had not participated in the NRL this season following what was initially labeled as a shoulder injury during the pre-season.

In an official statement, Arrow disclosed, “Following extensive medical assessments and consultations concerning persistent symptoms, I have recently been diagnosed with a nerve and neurological condition.”

MND is a progressive and rare ailment that impairs the nerves transmitting messages from the brain to muscles through the spinal cord. While there is currently no cure, the pace at which the disease progresses varies from person to person.

Arrow mentioned that he is under regular medical supervision and has ceased training and playing based on medical recommendations. He elaborated that further tests, consultations with specialists, and medical procedures are ongoing as his condition is continually evaluated.

Souths coach Wayne Bennett praised Arrow as a dedicated and hardworking individual, emphasizing his commitment to his family and team. Bennett expressed support for Arrow during this challenging period and commended him for his contributions on and off the field.

Rabbitohs CEO Blake Solly acknowledged Arrow’s enduring connection to the club, noting that although Arrow may not return to NRL action due to his diagnosis, his health and well-being take precedence over football. Solly highlighted Arrow’s resilience and character, traits that defined his playing career.

Having debuted in 2016 and amassed 178 NRL appearances, Arrow was recognized for his outstanding performance by receiving the George Piggins medal as the Rabbitohs’ top player last season.
